The Diagoonwoningen, designed by Herman Hertzberger, embodies the principles of structuralism in architecture, emphasizing the relationship between individuals and their environment. In light of contemporary challenges in communal living and sustainability, this design proposal reimagines the Diagoonwoningen by integrating a new function focused on communal living while adhering to Hertzberger’s structuralist ideals. This proposal introduces a wooden extension designed with adaptability and circularity in mind, addressing present-day needs and anticipating future changes.

Hertzberger’s approach emphasizes flexibility, social interaction, and the layering of spaces to foster community engagement. The proposed extension seeks to enhance these principles by providing shared spaces that promote interaction among residents. The design acknowledges the evolving nature of living arrangements and the necessity for adaptable environments that can respond to changing communal dynamics and individual needs.

The proposed extension embodies circular design principles by focusing on reusability and resource efficiency. By selecting durable materials and designing for disassembly, the project minimizes its environmental footprint. Future changes can be met with minimal disruption, allowing the community to evolve organically without the need for extensive renovations or new constructions.
